As of January 22nd, 2022, non US citizens must show proof of vaccination to enter the USA. Unvaccinated individuals are now banned.
It doesn't matter if you have recovered from Covid and have antibodies or if you have a medical exeption. The DHS states non-U.S. individuals travelling to the United States via land ports of entry or ferry terminals, whether for essential or non-essential reasons, must:
- verbally attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status;
- provide proof of a CDC-approved COVID-19 vaccination, as outlined on the CDC website;
- present a valid Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant document, such as a valid passport, Trusted Traveler Program card, or Enhanced Tribal Card; and,
- be prepared to present any other relevant documents requested by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer during a border inspection.
These requirements do not apply to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents or U.S. nationals.
COVID-19 testing is not required for entry via a land port of entry or ferry terminal.
It does remain possible for an individual who is ineligible to enter the US as a refugee, immigrant or nonimmigrant may be ''paroled'' into the US by the Secretary of Homeland Security. This provision of the law is only used for emergency, humanitarian and public interest reasons.
It is expected that this new mandate with further damage the supply chain difficulties ravaging the US and Canada in recent months as truck drivers who do long haul trips to and from Mexico and Canada are also subject to the new restrictions. Estimates are that as many as 30% of truckers remain unvaxed.
